Latest KM0 Live episode is now online for Friends of the Podcast
If you couldn’t make the latest KM0 Live event on Tuesday, the audio is now on the Friends of the Podcast feed for subscribers to listen to.
In The Home of Cycling 10-Year Reunion Daniel and Rob are back together in Majorca a decade after they first embarked on a flat-sharing arrangement in London’s Queen’s Park.
Ten years ago, Rob was a multi-sport commentator yet to specialise in cycling and Daniel was helping to build the fledgling Cycling Podcast alongside a successful career in written journalism before he became Television’s Daniel Friebe. They shared the flat with a Yucca plant they called ‘Marco Plantani’ and when they went their separate ways a couple of years later – Daniel to Germany, Rob to Spain – Daniel had to dispose of a mattress by cutting it into small cubes and depositing it in litter bins around the neighbourhood because he’d missed the deadline to get the council’s refuse service to take it away. Heady days indeed.
Their informal conversation earlier this week covers a lot of ground – from those flat-sharing days in London, their work in broadcasting and journalism, and a reflection on the 2024 road racing season – before viewers had a chance to submit questions in the second half.
There was a great turnout – thanks to the hundreds of Friends of the Podcast for tuning in – and there are tentative plans for a final KM0 episode of the year in the run-up to Christmas.
As well as KM0 Live there are a couple more episodes coming for Friends of the Podcast in the coming weeks.
Next up is an episode marking the 20th anniversary of the creation of the British Cycling Academy called The Class of ’04.
In the world of football, Manchester United’s ‘Class of ’92 – a cohort of youth academy graduates including David Beckham around whom the club built a dynasty – has been celebrated and mythologized, notably by an acclaimed documentary.
Manchester, England, though was also the birthplace of an even more remarkable story of talent identification and incubation in another sport – cycling. In The Class of ’04 we recount the miracle that saw two student flats three miles from Manchester United’s Old Trafford produce a Tour de France champion, the greatest sprinter of all-time, and one of the greatest ever track riders.
Then, in December, following Lionel’s trip to the UCI Gravel World Championships in Leuven earlier this month we’ll explore how the road and gravel scenes are increasingly crossing over and ask what’s next for the off-road discipline as it becomes more popular with the leading road professionals.
There are more than 300 episodes to listen to on the Friends of the Podcast feed right now, stretching back to 2015 when we launched KM0 at the Tour de France and including some listener favourites recorded over the past decade. By signing up as a Friend of the Podcast you are also making a huge contribution to The Cycling Podcast, enabling us to plan for the 2025 season and beyond.
Get well soon, Marianne
This summer marked the 40th anniversary of the Tour de France Féminin, the forerunner to the Tour de France Femmes. It was won by the American rider Marianne Martin, who featured in an episode of KM0 called 1984, recorded last year, in which she talked about that groundbreaking first women’s Tour.
As road.cc reported last week, Marianne crashed while descending Sunshine Canyon near Boulder earlier this month and suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a broken collarbone and concussion.
While her medical treatment is covered, a friend of Marianne’s has launched a Go Fund Me campaign to raise funds so she has time to focus fully on her recovery.
Everyone at The Cycling Podcast would like to wish Marianne a speedy recovery. Her story of the 1984 Tour de France Féminin is an inspirational listen if you want to find out more about the winner of that trailblazing event and a race that inspired the title of our women’s cycling podcast, The Cycling Podcast Féminin.
Next week’s episode: The 2025 Tour de France launches
The routes for the 2025 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes will be unveiled in Paris on Tuesday (October 29). Daniel will be joined by the doyen of French cycling journalism, François Thomazeau, and Richard Abraham on next week’s episode to discuss the route that will take the riders from Lille to Paris in July.
