2024 Giro d’Italia
Grande Torino (FOTP) – The opening stage of the race in Turin coincided with the 75th anniversary of the air disaster which claimed the lives of arguably Italy’s greatest sports team, the post-war football champions Torino. We told the story of Grande Torino.
Love & Other Drugs (FOTP) – With Tadej Pogačar aiming for the first part of a historic Giro-Tour double, we looked back at the 1998 Giro, when Marco Pantani completed the feat. However, for Daniel it wasn’t Pantani who caught the eye in 1998.
Sierra Alpha (FOTP) – We sent Fran Reyes to Sierra Nevada for a behind-the-scenes look at Pog’s Giro preparations.
KM0 Live: Girovagando 2024 (FOTP) – On the eve of the Giro we hosted our first KM0 Live virtual event. Daniel was joined by Giro stage winner Joe Dombrowski and Larry Warbasse of Larranzando fame. You can listen to the audio of the event on the Friends of the Podcast feed.
Sugar Rush (FOTP) – Sports nutrition strategies have evolved rapidly thanks to a revolutionary approach to carbohydrates. It’s a trend that began in 2018 with Chris Froome’s Beta Fuelled long-distance raid. We investigated the phenomenon.
Tappone (FOTP) – Join Daniel and Brian for a day in the life at the Giro on the Queen Stage, or ‘tappone’ to Livigno. What is the history and significance of the Giro’s biggest day?

There are three episodes to listen to in this edition of The 11.01 Cappuccino – The Miracle of Castel di Sangro from 2021 and Hungary Eyes and The Duel from 2022.
All these episodes (unless stated) are on the regular free-to-air feed for the time being but will move to the Friends of the Podcast feed later this summer. Key: FOTP = Friends of the Podcast feed. Free = Regular feed
2021 Giro d’Italia
The Baron of Biella – Daniel introduced us to the Baron of Biella, Giuseppe Acquadro, reputedly cycling’s first ‘super-agent’.
Remco the Reboot – Remco Evenepoel returned to racing at the Giro after nine months out with injury. A lot was expected of the 21-year-old phenomenon. We told the story.
The Miracle of Castel di Sangro – With a Giro stage starting in Castel di Sangro, Richard revisited one of the great sports book, written by Joe McGinniss, a celebrated American writer who decided to go and live in the town when the local football team got promoted to Serie B.
Listen to the Miracle of Castel di Sangro here.
La Prima Donna – We met Giada Borgato, former professional rider and Italian champion, who made history as the first female co-commentator for the Italian state broadcaster Rai’s Giro coverage.
The Austrian Interloper – At Strade Bianche earlier in the spring, Michael Gogl found himself in a break with Pogačar, Van der Poel, Alaphilippe, Bernal, Van Aert and Pidcock. As the Giro prepared to face the white roads we met him.
Alfredo, Forever – A visit to Tuscany to pay tribute to a legend of Italian cycling – Alfredo Martini, who was national team coach from 1975 to 1997, a period which delivered six rainbow jerseys.
Frontierland – The Giro ventured to the far north-east, dipping into Slovenia, and we went in search of an unheralded region’s soul.
The Stage Winners – After two weeks of racing, 11 of the 16 stages had been won by first-time Grand Tour stage winners. We heard from them, and from an agent about the value of a stage win in a Grand Tour.
Filippo Nazionale – Who is Filippo Ganna? We went in search of the world time trial champion who was hot favourite to win the final time trial in Milan.
2022 Giro d’Italia
The Prodigious Son – Attila Valter was one of three Hungarian riders lining up at the Giro, and the first rider from the country to lead a Grand Tour.
Hungary Eyes – Daniel and Lionel explored Hungary and discussed the long-awaited grande partenza (postponed because of the pandemic) and the reasons why the Giro had chosen the country as a launchpad for the race.
Listen to Hungary Eyes here.
The Duel – A two-part account of one of the closest Grand Tours of all-time, the 2012 Giro when Ryder Hesjedal beat Joaquim Rodriguez by just 16 seconds.
Listen to The Duel part one.
And part two.
La Rosea / The Pinky – We explored La Gazzetta dello Sport, the newspaper which gave the Giro its pink jersey.
Popo’s Mission – Daniel met Yaroslav Popovych, the Ukrainian Trek-Segafredo sports director who watched helplessly as Russia invaded his home country, before deciding to swing into action.
Poetry and Motion – The story of Salò, Pier Paolo Pasolini and one of the most scandalous films ever made.
Thinking Pink – Sports psychologists and mental coaches were changing the sport in an era of marginal gains. We spoke to Robbie Anderson of Ineos Grenadiers.
In Fair Verona – Lionel revisited the Giro’s previous finish in Verona, when Francesco Moser defeated Laurent Fignon in the final time trial. This episode featured writers Herbie Sykes and Tim Parks.
Girovagando: The Giro Road Trip 2022 – Go behind the scenes in The Cycling Podcast at the Giro with Daniel, Lionel and Brian. (FOTP)
2023 Giro d’Italia
Imbroglio! The Big Italian Food Lie (FOTP) – Will we ever look at pizza, pasta or cappuccino the same after this myth-busting exploration of Italian cuisine with Professor Alberto Grandi and John Dickie?
Pelgrim’s Way (FOTP) – We introduced Remco Evenepoel’s coach Koen Pelgrim and found out how to steer one of the most talented riders in the world to victory.
Napule: City of Gods (FOTP) – Another visit to Naples, the chaotic, slightly scruffy, beating heart of southern Italy, where the locals were celebrating the first Italian league championship since the days of Diego Maradona.
Tao In The Hunt – Daniel and Lionel dialled up Tao Geoghegan Hart for a relaxed rest day chat, not knowing at the time that his Giro would come to a painful end just two days later.
The Dane Gang (FOTP) – Tuscany is home to The Cycling Podcast’s Great Dane, Brian Nygaard, but it was also the place a generation of Danish riders migrated to in the 1990s and 2000s, so they could train alongside the homegrown ‘campioni’.
The Emerald Mine (FOTP) – The junior Giro della Lungiana, and its distinctive emerald green leader’s jersey, has uncovered many stars of the future including Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Vincenzo Nibali and, going further back, Damiano Cunego, Gilberto Simoni and Maurizio Fondriest. We learned more about the race.
La Corsa Rotta? (FOTP) – It seemed like the Giro was falling apart. Covid, crashes, bad weather – the sense that the race’s tagline ‘the hardest race in the most beautiful race’ covered symptoms of a deeper malaise. Was La Corsa Rosa in need of a revamp?
Tifoso (FOTP) – Daniel and Brian discuss one of the most intense rivalries in Giro history, between Franceso Moser and Giuseppe Saronni, which split the fans down the middle.
Closing Time (FOTP) – Mark Cavendish announced his plan to retire at the end of the 2023 season with an emotional rest day press conference. Of course, he reversed his decision after crashing out of the Tour de France but this was nevertheless a poignant reflection on the Manx Missile’s announcement.
Background Interference? (FOTP) – Former team press officer Brian Nygaard explores the relationship between the media and the teams and riders.
